Aqaba is
Jordan’s only outlet to the Red
Sea. Aqaba
enjoys a tropical climate in a spectacular
setting of plan
trees, orange and purple - colored mountains and sandy
beaches . Aqaba’s main attractions include some of
the
world’s finest scuba diving and snorkeling, a wide range
of water sports , an extensive
aquarium, and several
archaeological sites that are still being
excavated. One
can swim , sail , surf and
water ski along 18kms of
coast line , or dive into a magical world of
exotic fish or
coral . There are over 140
species of coral that have
been identified to
date, and at least 40 species of coral
or fish at Aqaba exist
nowhere else in the world.
For the history enthusiasts
there are sites reflecting
human habitation for at
least 5.500 years , resulting
from Aqaba’s strategic location
at the junction of land
and sea routes from Asia , Africa and Europe.
Of special interest among the
ancient and medieval archaeological sites is the
early Islamic called Ayla. The Mamluk Sultan Qansawh El
Ghawi built Aqaba fort at early 16th
century AD . Also on an island in
the middle of theGulf of Aqaba is the castle
of Saladdin dating Back to the 12th century AD.
